This JVC initiative is part of an international network of JVC initiatives which began in the USA in the 1950’s in response to a desire by young people for such a community experience that would allow them volunteer fulltime, while giving them more space for active personal development, including faith development. The JVC year is designed to help participants along the road of becoming everything they were created to be! It will help participants… • Discern deepest desires, In Ireland the JVC community is based in two flats in one of the high rise blocks in Ballymun. Up to 6 young adults spend the equivalent of 1 academic year living simply, in community and working approx. 4 days a week in number of selected partner projects e.g. working with the homeless, helping an after schools project for children at risk, working with refugees. Each week there is a facilitated community night where experiences of work, life and faith are discussed in an open and relaxed manner. Participants are also encouraged to avail of a personal spiritual guide.
' It was time when I came to know some of the most amazing people I have ever met, but more importantly a time when I came to know myself' '..it's a different world... God is to be found in all things, that (for me) gives much more meaning to even the smallest things..' ' for me personally it really just broadened my whole experience of God, of faith, of the Christian faith'. 'I had the freedom to choose anything I wanted to get involved in, it's very free, that's what fantastic about it. It's almost like you're given a blank canvas'. 'I grew up with a kind of traditional sense of what it means to be a Catholic or Christian. Now it's more meaningful, it's a much more active faith that I have'
