Social justice cannot be attained by violence. Violence kills what it intends to create.

You cannot be a Christian on your own……. There is an innate human need to belong and feel supported on life’s journey. The same is true of development in faith. It’s good to be part of a vibrant community who will both challenge and support whether its people meeting once a week, or month or living together as part of a faith community!

Slí Eile – Jesuit Centre for Young Adults runs a number of community programmes as part of our overall work . The community projects are in response to a desire from young adults who share a common search for exploring their faith and engaging in some practical social justice project, while at the same time holding these and bringing the different experiences into the shared community life. Often community life is seen as the privilege of the religious but here young adults have the chance to “dip their toe” into what this could mean for them as lay persons. Each of the communities have 4 pillars that underpin them: Community, Spirituality, Justice and Simple living.

The community projects that Slí Eile currently runs are:

Jesuit Volunteer Communities (JVC)

In Ireland the JVC community is based in two flats in one of the high rise blocks in Ballymun. Up to 6 young adults spend the equivalent of 1 academic year living simply, in community and working approx. 4 days a week in number of selected partner projects e.g. working with the homeless, helping an after schools project for children at risk, working with refugees.

Each week there is a facilitated community night where experiences of work, life and faith are discussed in an open and relaxed manner. Participants are also encouraged to avail of a personal spiritual guide.
